The newly launched curriculum is part of the board’s SEWA Program(Social Empowerment through Work Education and Action).

It will be inducted in about 200 schools across the following 13 states in India –

  1. Delhi-NCR,
  2. Karnataka,
  3. Tamil Nadu,
  4. Orissa,
  5. Kerala,
  6. West Bengal,
  7. Andhra Pradesh,
  8. Telangana,
  9. Maharashtra,
  10. Madhya Pradesh,
  11. Uttar Pradesh,
  12. Rajasthan
  13. Punjab

The new AI curriculum is based around a course framework for students. It consists of basically –

  1. knowledge – Including Basic Awareness, Historical knowledge and it’s Applications,
  2. skills like – designing, computational skill, data fluency, critical thinking and application
  3. values – Ethical knowledge for removal of prejudice.

It is strengthened with problem-based learning effects and appraisal techniques for educators.

Its aim is to instill basic aptitude of AI in students to make them not just buyers of AI, but producers as well.

As the standards for Grades XI & XII are quite high, special care is taken to match it.

And so, the curriculum was co-developed with Macquarie University (Australia) and Indian members – the Learning Links Foundation and 1M1B.

This new AI Curriculum began in September 2019 with an aim to impart basic AI skills into 5000 students of class XI and 1000 teachers.

After the launch in 2019, a string of Orientation and Training sessions were conducted for educators from September 2019 to June 2020.

As part of co-operation, training programs for over 5000 students were conducted, for a total of 408 hours, in workshops.

At the launch event on Thursday, Sandip Patel, the General Manager of IBM India and South Asia confessed that –

“The question on the minds of educators and economists alike is –
how will technology impact jobs moving forward and how can we prepare our students to succeed in an increasingly automated, AI-driven world.
The objective of our exciting collaboration with CBSE is to help address some of those challenges by designing one of the most accessible and comprehensive gateways for students to begin their AI journey.
As they think through designing innovative solutions to address key problems, we also get them deliberate about the ethical implications of the technology.
The potential success of the IBM designed AI curriculum in our everyday lives can be glimpsed in the work showcased in this year’s ‘An I for Better India’ initiative.
We congratulate the finalists and eagerly look forward to bring in a new generation of problem-solvers who will leverage AI to build a better world for everyone.”

And to this Manoj Ahuja, Chairperson, CBSE, further added-

“AI will certainly become all-pervasive in our lives in the coming years and it is important to inculcate the necessary skills & knowledge right from high school level.
The unique proposition of the IBM AI curriculum is that it allows Grade XI & XII students from all streams, in addition to Computer Science, to build the foundation for themselves to be AI-ready.
This same ethos has been carried forward in our ‘An I for Better India’ initiative as well as ‘IBM EdTech Youth Challenge’ which helps break the myth around AI.
With support from IBM, we are proud to lead the way for the nation by developing such an innovative training-based learning approach for students & teachers, while inspiring them to use AI for social good.”

Meanwhile, both partners also launched the  ‘2020 IBM EdTech Youth Challenge’ to encourage teams of students and teachers.

It aims to motivate them to ponder upon technologies like cloud, AI, blockchain to solve existing problems the society is facing.

The Final winners for this competition will get a two-week apprenticeship and guidance from the senior leaders at IBM.

They will also have chances to participate in national or global hackathons or meetings.
