• Early Days:

Jason Roy was born on 21 July 1990 in Durban South Africa. He wasn’t much interested in the game of cricket. Instead, he enjoyed more games like Rugby and Surfing. He was academically a brilliant student. He is a batsman who loves books as much as his bat.

Cricket happened to Roy when he moved to England at a young age of 10.  He attended The Hawthorns School for a few years, then Whitgift School. He represented Surrey in age-group cricket from Under-11 through to Under-19 and Academy level. His performances for Surrey at Junior level were always impressive.

He made his debut for the Surrey first team in a Twenty20 Cup match against Middlesex on 27 June 2008 and made his List A debut in the Natwest Pro40 League fixture against Yorkshire on 20 July 2008, the day before his 18th birthday.

He was used as a substitute fielder for England’s Test team against South Africa in the final test of the 2008 series at The Oval.

• The One-Day and T-20 Specialist:

Jason Roy got the opportunity to represent  Three Lions in the format he loves the most i.e, T-20  against India in 2014. He was dismissed for 8 in his first international innings.

He failed to make his mark initially in the game at a big level. Owing to his fair performance in two years, Roy secured his place in the squad for World Cup T-20 2016.

Roy couldn’t make his mark in the first game But set the stage on fire in the second game where he scored 43 off 16 balls. He scored a quickfire 78 in the semi-final game against Sri Lanka and took England to the Final where they lost to West Indies.

Roy was performing well in T-20 cricket but he was struggling in ODIs to give consistent performances. His poor patch in ODIs led him to lose his place in ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

In 2018 Roy scored splendid 180 against Australia in the first ODI  in Melbourne. Since then his fortunes completely changed in the ODI cricket.

• World Cup 2019 Heroics:

Jason Roy was selected for World Cup 2019. “If Bairstow won’t get you then  Roy definitely would!” this became the tagline for the English Opener During 2019 World Cup.

Roy scored 153 runs against Bangladesh at Sophia Gardens which is the second-highest scored by an Englishmen in World Cup cricket. During England’s win against the West Indies, Roy re-aggravated a hamstring injury he had been suffering with early in the season whilst fielding during the first innings. He missed three games due to injury.

Jason Roy scored 66 in his comeback game against India and kept the qualification hopes alive for England. In the semi-final against Australia, Roy scored 85 runs off 65 balls. He did not score high in the final but he lifted the maiden World Cup trophy for England.

Roy was included in the ICC’s CWC2019 Team of the Tournament as one of the opening batsmen alongside Rohit Sharma.

• Test Cricket “The Real Test” :

Jason Roy was included in the Test squad of England for the game against Ireland. But he failed to make his mark. He has played only  5  test matches till now and has scored only a single fifty-plus score.

Jason Roy was moved to no.4 from the opening position in the Ashes and then subsequently he was dropped from the Test squad.

• IPL:

Jason Roy played for Gujarat Lions in 2017. He did not get many opportunities as GL already had likes of Aaron Finch, Brendon Mccullum, DR. Smith. In 2018 he was picked by Delhi Capitals were he scored splendid 91  in the opening game but later his game just faded away.

• Some Interesting Facts about Jason Roy:

1. Jason Roy was brilliant in academics. He was even offered a place at St. Mary s University College at Belfast. But he turned down the offer for pursuing Cricket.
2.  Roy became the first-ever batsman from Surrey to score an unbeaten century in T20 cricket. He scored 101 off 57 deliveries against Kent.
3. Roy might be a hero for England today, but he faced certain dark days in 2012 when his close friend and fellow cricketer Tom Maynard was killed on a railway track while attempting to flee police in south London. It hit Roy hard and made it difficult for him to concentrate on the game.
4. In his off time, Roy loves to play golf. Not just with Kevin Pietersen, he also plays along with his friends.
5. During 2017, Jason Roy was given run not for obstructing the field.
