Holi is a famous Hindu festival that is celebrated popularly by people from different parts of the country. It is celebrated to mark the arrival of the good spring harvest season and the end of the winter season. Holi also celebrates the victory of good over evil. On this day, everyone sends happy Holi wishes to each other and enjoys the day with great joy and happiness.
Holi is celebrated on the last full moon day of the lunisolar month of the Hindu calendar. It is the ‘festival of colors ‘. People play with colors with their families and friends and splash around water pichkaaris. Some use water balloons and throw them at each other making all the other people drenched in waters of different colors. People also perform various dance forms and sing many folklores to celebrate the festival.
People also distribute and share sweets with each other. It is also a festival of unity and forgiveness. By applying gulaal on each other’s faces, even the worst enemies also become friends on this auspicious day. The celebration and the tradition followed in the festival is called ‘Holi Milan’.
If we look into our history, we find a lot of evidence in historical texts which denote how important this festival of Holi is. There are many ancient traditional stories surrounding the origin of Holi. History tells us that the name of the festival is named after Holika, the sister of a demon king, Hiranyakashipu. This demon king was immortalized and hence, no power in the world could kill him in any way. However, when Hiranyakashipu came to know of his superpower of immortality, he turned evil and started harming and killing everyone around him. On knowing this, his son Prahlad decided to kill him but when the demon king got to know of his son’s intentions of killing him, he told his sister, Holika to kill Prahlad instead. On the day which now marks as Holi, Holika was meant to wear a cloak and throw Prahlad into the bonfire. But, when Holika reached the fire, the cloak flew away from her shoulders and covered Prahlad and protected him instead, burning Holika to ashes. Therefore, Holi is popularly known for the victory of good over evil.
The festival is usually celebrated lavishly and grandly by the people living in the region of Mathura and Vrindavan, to honor, cherish, and commemorate the holy love and union of Radha and Lord Krishna.
On this day, people all over the world come together to celebrate the festival and spread joy and happiness in the air, and acknowledge all the shades of colors in life. However, this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, people have to still stay at their homes and maintain social distancing from each other but this does not subdue our excitement for the festival and have to put a damper on this festival as we can still celebrate Holi virtually with your loved ones. It is best to stay at home and stay safe, especially given the rising Covid cases in India. However, one can always send across their love and best wishes to their near and dear ones through social networking sites without jeopardizing anybody’s health.
